Reddit

Reddit helps you find conversations around specific interests, whether you want to ask a parenting question, discuss a video game, or follow technology news. The platform organizes much of that activity into communities called subreddits, where members publish posts and respond through comments and votes. You can share text, photos, and videos, follow communities and posts, and receive notifications about replies. This combination makes it useful both for keeping up with subjects you already follow and for bringing a question to people who share an interest in it.

Find a subreddit or start your own

Community search is a starting point for exploring Reddit's thousands of groups. Topics include art, technology, gaming, mental health, cryptocurrency, politics, cats, and memes. Other discussions cover sports highlights, television fan theories, entertainment, artificial intelligence, and pop culture. Joining subreddits lets you build a set of interests rather than relying only on a broad stream of unrelated posts.

You can also create a subreddit around a subject of your choice and invite others to contribute posts, questions, and comments. Communities can be private, including groups intended for friends, giving community creation a role beyond public discussion.

Share something or ask the community

Posts support written content as well as photos and videos. Comment threads give other members a place to respond with questions, observations, humor, or advice. Following a post and receiving reply notifications helps you return to an ongoing exchange without having to search for it again.

Questions can range from relationships and parenting to careers, fitness, and financial topics. Reddit also hosts Ask Me Anything sessions, commonly called AMAs, in which celebrities, politicians, and experts answer users' questions. These sit alongside everyday community discussions, so question-and-answer exchanges are not limited to formal events.

Votes, sorting, and karma

Members can upvote or downvote posts and comments, helping influence which contributions become more visible. Sorting options include Best, Hot, New, Top, and Rising. These offer different ways to explore a community, such as looking for recent submissions or viewing content that has attracted attention.

Participation also connects to Reddit's karma system, through which members can earn points for their contributions. Some subreddits require a minimum amount of karma before allowing posts. That restriction can affect where a new account is able to contribute, even after finding a relevant community.

A profile without your real name

You can use a profile name other than your real name and customize an avatar. Profile and visibility options let you choose how to present yourself while posting, commenting, or chatting with other members. A pseudonymous profile supports participation without making your real name the focus of each conversation; it should not be confused with a guarantee of privacy.

Follow interests and explore trending threads

The home feed draws on followed communities and posts, while trending content offers another route into current conversations. You can explore threads and subreddits attracting attention in your country or more broadly around the world, and customize the topics you see. Alongside news and debate, this can include lighter material such as memes, funny cat clips, and satisfying videos.
